America in Crisis by Robert H. Rusoff

By Robert Rusoff

Today our nation is in a crisis not unlike those experienced by our ancestors and forefathers from 1775 to today.  Those of us who believe in our great nation, the rule of law and what America stands for can no longer sit on the sidelines while others seek, in their misguided ways, to destroy our nation. In Common Sense, Thomas Paine wrote:  “These are the times that try men’s souls.  The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands for it now, deserves the love and thanks of men and women.”

We need to demonstrate our beliefs in America and the rule of law to those that believe everything is for the taking and that citizenship has the same or lesser value than a cup of coffee.  We can no longer be the summer soldier.  We must stand up and be counted lest we become a footnote in the history of our country.  The survival of our country depends upon us.

Our nation is a beacon of freedom for people from all nations who seek to live, work, and create. The melting pot of the past gave our country

The idea of the American Melting Pot

The idea of the American Melting Pot

and we, its citizens,  our strength and our greatness.  Today, we long for immigrants who seek to enter our country legally whether to stay and become citizens, to learn or teach at our universities or help continue to fuel our creative genius in this the Internet Age.

To those who have entered our country illegally, now is the time for truth.  Are you ready to become an American, learn English and continue our melting pot tradition?  Your demonstrations may sway some; however, your actions and the words of your spokespersons validate our perception of you as takers and non-creative contributors to our country.  You can, if you chose, learn our language-English-and assimilate into our very diverse culture or remain as you are.

We need to remain vigilant and not become a summer soldier.  Let us go forth and “Celebrate America” in all forums open to us as citizens.  Let us show those that seek to demean the value of citizenship, flaunt the rule of law and act as March Hares in an Alice and Wonderland World that we are the true American citizens by our deeds and words.  Our nation, our ancestors and the guardians of the American way of life-our soldiers-deserve no less from us.
