Leading Judiciary Committee Republican charges that Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is “out of the mainstream” of legal thinking and has a very activist judicial profile. Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama made this assertion, while on CBS’s “The Early Show”, just hours before Sotomayor was to face her initial confirmation hearing.

The Judiciary Committee Hearings begin today with opening remarks from the panel’s 12 Democrats and 7 Republicans and will be followed by Sonia Sotomayor’s own statement which is thought to be with emphasis on her struggles to rise from life of poverty in New York City.

Judiciary Committee Hearings, for Sotomayor, will begin questioning on Tuesday with Republicans expected to take care in preventing to offend Hispanic voters with fair questioning and not attacking her too harshly. The Republicans are still expected to press Sotomayor to explain past rulings involving discrimination complaints and gun rights, with additional additional questions regarding remarks that raise doubts of her ability to judge fairly as a Supreme Court judge.

The discrimination complaints and gun rights issues are of great concern to many Conservative Americans from both the Democrat and Republican parties.

A history of decisions being overturned, a history with 17 years from the bench as a Federal Judge, still has many Americans concerned about her abilities to judge fairly in America’s highest court.
