President Obama Disrespects Fallen Soldiers and Vacations in Chicago Instead (Updated)

By

Memorial Day is the day set aside to honor our fallen soldiers and normally the Commander In Chief aka The President of the United States traditionally marks this solemn occasion by leading the ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery and lays the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. But not this year.

President Obama instead will be heading home to Illinois for vacation with his family, sending instead VP Biden to honor the fallen who gave it all defending our country.

The news of Obama feeling vacation with his family being more important than fulfilling his duty as Commander in Chief hit every veteran, every active service member, every family who lost a loved one in the course of fighting for freedom like a punch to the heart.

Arlington National Cemetary - Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Arlington National Cemetary and the Tomb of the Unknowns

In 1921, the United States , following France and England, laid to rest the remains of a World War I American soldier — his name “known but to God” — on a Virginia hillside overlooking the city of Washington DC and the Potomac River. This site became known as the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier,” and today is called the “Tomb of the Unknowns.” Located in Arlington National Cemetery, the tomb symbolizes dignity and reverence for the American veteran. Since then, the remains of ‘Unknown’ soldiers from every war have been added , and is guarded continuously by the “Old Guard” -specially trained members of the 3rd Infantry. This Monument holds more than just remains, it holds the hearts of all who love this county and what it stands for.

Tradition calls for a wreath to be laid at this Tomb to honor our fallen. And tradition that calls for the Leader of our Military to do so. After researching, this author could not find any records of where a President missed this ceremony.

Obama chooses instead to vacation with his family, and lead the ceremony at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois. Now for this president to do so, is it another blatant attempt to align himself once again with Lincoln? Is it to take one more step further away from our Military by choosing a site other than the Arlington National Cemetery?

The Main Stream Media seems for the most part OK with the switch, happy he is finally ’heading home’. Most notably is Anne Kornblut of the Washington Post referring to the trip as Osama’s “addressing one of the great broken promises of his administration: his early pledge to return home to Chicago every six weeks or so.”, and the Chicago Tribute fretting over the agenda “Where will they dine? What will they do for fun? With the Sox on the road and the Blackhawks skating into the Stanley Cup finals, might the first family ditch its predictable pastimes — basketball, golf and tennis — and go to the United Center for hockey?

One cant help but wonder, what they would have said if it was GW Bush heading to Texas? And if this is one of the ‘great promises’ that he has broken, what does that say about this Comander in Chief? When the big news is whether or not the Obamas get to have fun on Memorial Day instead of the fact he is shunning his duties, even a symbolic duty such as this, our country is in deeper trouble than we thought.

The White House’s Official Press Release states,

First family to spend weekend in Chicago

WASHINGTON—On Thursday, May 27, President Barack Obama and his family will travel to Chicago, where they will spend the weekend.  On Monday, the President will participate in a Memorial Day ceremony at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.

Also on Monday, the Vice President and Dr. Jill Biden will host a breakfast for Gold Star Families at the White House.  Afterwards, the Vice President and Dr. Biden will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

More details, including press credentialing information will be released in the coming days.

Correction Update: Erick Erickson provided the following details about previous Presidents missing this event in his blog:

Barack Obama is skipping the Memorial Day tradition of the President laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns. It is not unprecedented. George H. W. Bush was on the campaign trail in 1992 and scheduled to speak at an American Legions event in Maine on Memorial Day.

Ronald Reagan was in the midst of a contentious economic summit in 1983 and so sent George H. W. Bush on his behalf.

There is still a difference between work causing you to miss such an important event and choosing to take a vacation rather than do your Presidential duty.

  1. FuckObama. says:

Are you f*****g kidding me?! The point of the matter is, that this racially confused ignorant ass, is disrespecting every person who has sacrificed their lives, so that you people can sit on your fat arses, debating this argument as you sit there thinking you don’t NEED the military. If it weren’t for the military, and those men and women who OBAMA is disrespecting, you wouldn’t be able to be having this debate right now, because there wouldn’t be a United States of America. So all of you ungrateful f*****s who have probably NEVER known someone who sacrificed their lives for this country because you were busy being “repressed” in a modern society that doesn’t give a s**t what you look like, only that you act like ignorant arses, which is ironically the definition of nigger, to care about what the f**k is happening in this country. Only that your idolized moron who won the “popularity” contest to get into the white house is being selfish and thoughtless, and you look at it, as him bringing the country “closer to home.” The day that man actually makes a plan, is the day the USA is going to end.

  2. I their is a lot of fallen soldier that die on the battle field to keep this country free. The commander and chief of this country has neglected his duty to lay wreath unknown soldier the soldier fought and die to gives this man freedom and he repays this freedon with this type of respects.

  3. united states soldier says:

god bless you Gary M, Fuck O, for the both of you have described the basis of why i do what i do…i defend this country for God, for family, for country, and for honor, and in that order. he shreaded the constitution, and made a joke of the bible on nation television (site enclosed) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBOo0BOpSn8, robbed my family through taxes for his social programs, there was only one thing left unscaved by this arregant fuck hole! my honor! and yet my commander in chief…the man who by law leads me into battle, doesnt respect me, doesnt care for me, and doesnt give a damn if i die! why fight? is there still an america? does anyone still care at all? why isnt anything being done? this man is an unqualified fuck…he was only elected to be the token black man, otherwise (and this can be verified) 98% of african americans wouldnt have voted for him. it wasnt about republicans and democrats, it was about race! the one thing this country is trying to get around. please if you agree to at least something i said, could someone tell me so i know that there is someone left who see’s this and cares.

  4. FrmrMarine says:

actually, Reagan missed it once because he made his speach at West Point… not bad, we cant foult him for that. but he missed it again when he was on vacation to his Californiaranch another year… HW Bush NEVER WENT! … how about getting your facts straight.

  5. FrmrMarine says:

  6. You might want to take a look at the Correction Update in the article to find that I did indeed provide corrections and facts. See, unlike the leftist extremists, I'm not afraid to make necessary corrections in order to provide as much factual information as I can in order to keep the records straight. Thanks for taking time to read the comments instead of the article.

  7. Elaine says:

And, I would give you that hug if I could. Am the daughter, wife, mother and grandma of ex-military. And, your politically incorrect post is refreshing. You have expressed my feelings.

  8. hummm says:

I am a veteran and I understand the concerns that has risen, why are the ones surprised that he didnt attend, while enjoying your day off(if you were given that option}did you take the time out to watch the ceremony, apparently not, if so you would have known he wasnt there, so we need to check ourselves first before passing judgement on someone else

  9. American Renagade says:

I still stand firm on my take on how important it is for the Commander-in-Chief to honor our fallen at Arlington. Only exception is his when his duties cause him to be elsewhere.

And personally, I feel Veterans day show be a day off from work for all VETS – not the Government only Holiday as it is now.

  10. Does it matter says:

This article is so full of shit. You people would call Fox news if you found he didn’t wipe his ass the same way you do it.
