When individuals establish for themselves a government of their own choosing, they generally establish a structure for that government, and explicitly spell out the mission of that government, its purposes, and most importantly, the limitations they impose upon that government. Every bit of detail which outlines the functions of the various branches and bureaucracies of a government is in and of itself a kind of parameter which limits the scope of government to a particular area. Governments which step outside of the boundaries of these missions are generally held to be in violation of the charters and constitutions which give them their authority. In short, a government which violates its mission by stepping beyond the boundaries of its enumerated authorities and roles has abdicated its claim to legitimacy. It is no longer a government of informed consent; it is instead a government which exists in spite of consent and whose continued existence depends on misinformed consent.

Statism and Myth as a Tool of Survival and Perpetuation Part VII: The State and the Law

“Fear is the foundation of most governments; but it is so sordid and brutal a passion, and renders men in whose breasts it predominates so stupid and miserable, that Americans will not be likely to approve of any political institution which is founded on it.”

- John Adams, letter to George Wythe

There are reasons why we impose limitations upon the state. We recognize that the natural inclination of statists, or of those individuals who seek power through positions within the statist bureaucracy, is to arrogate greater power unto themselves for the purpose of perpetuating their own authority and expanding that authority. The great flaw within America, indeed within many states, is the assumption by citizens that the state will observe the limitations upon its own power. The state inevitably evolves a wanton disregard for the very laws it is supposed to uphold.… Read the rest

Perhaps nothing is so annoying to a statist than an individual who places himself in a position of superiority, as opposed to the ancillary function which most statists believe is the proper role of citizens. In the world of statists, citizens are to complement the state by conforming to its every demand, no matter how unreasonable or intrusive. Buckle your seat belt, go outside to smoke, and don’t drink a drop before you get behind the wheel of a car, ever. Be kind, rewind; don’t be a litterbug; say no to drugs; recycle and reuse. Though the state builds roads and bridges with your tax dollars, don’t you dare run the toll booth. And whatever you do, no matter how unpleasant or unprofessional the police are during a routine stop or a traffic violation, do not reciprocate their attitude with one of your own.

That last part is one that we can all identify with. I’ve always… Read the rest

Today I had a twitter friend who identifies herself as, victoria_29, share with me one of the more impressive campaign ads I’ve seen in quite some time. The candidate is Rick Barber who is running for Congress in a GOP primary runoff in Alabama’s 2nd District July 13th. In the ad Mr. Barber meets with three very important people to discuss the evils of the progressive income tax and its intersection with health care. I’m betting you can figure out just who these people are as you watch the video below.

Note from the Editor: The 912 Project Fan Site has chosen to not endorse candidates. This is not to be misunderstood as an endorsement of any kind. I am reporting on this to acknowledge a powerful and quite impressive ad for my readers.

Part One: Statism and Myth

The state is the dominant mode of societal organization in our world today. States are proliferating at a rate of 3.1 additional states per year, with the U.N. growing from some 50 members in 1950 to to 191 members today (28, The Untied States of America Enriquez, Juan Crown 2005). Eventually, all states find themselves fracturing this way and that, as the myths which they employ to justify their existence no longer suffice or hold up under the scrutiny of independent minds. Despite the hopes of anarchists, the state continues to multiply at an alarming rate; moreover, despite the hopes of nationalists, the state continues to fragment at an staggering rate.

There are many causes for this, but none are more prominent or as easily identifiable as statism’s chief means of promoting or justifying its existence: the myth. The narrative is the most important tool available to states to promote their existence,… Read the rest

Even as individualists, many of us want to group ourselves according to some larger identification or affiliation. Since my gradual transition to minarchism began as the outgrowth of my move into libertarianism some ten years ago when I supported Harry Browne, I have been perpetually amused by the insistence of many anarchists and minarchists alike that they want nothing (or at most, as little as possible) higher than the individual as a mode of organization. One has only to look at the wide spectrum of denominational affiliations within anarchism, minarchism, and agorism to see that there are higher modes of affiliation and even organization within our spectrum.

How this would result in something other than statism or at least a construct which resembles statism in at least some respects has never been explained to me. People group and cluster together naturally, being social animals. They recognize collective interests, agendas, and beliefs and they group and organize around those… Read the rest

In another example of how the federal government doesn’t work for the average American, next year you will be approached by your employer about a new payroll deduction. The deduction, which funds long term care in the home, will cost anywhere from $146 to $240 a month depending on whose estimate you accept as valid. It’s all part of a hidden bill with the recently enacted healthcare reform law known as the CLASS (Community Living Assistance Services and Support) Act.

You’ll likely find that that the option is voluntary at first, but the reality is this: in a time where many of us have few dollars to spare, how many of us have an additional $146 to $240 a month to buy long term care insurance administered by the federal government? And how long will it be before this entitlement program, like so many others, becomes a mandate on workers as the government realizes that without full… Read the rest

Reflections on the Declaration of Independence and Our Current Circumstances

It is a habit of mine to revisit those documents so instrumental in the organization and structuring of our country from time to time. I am an enthusiast for the archaic facts of history, as I find that it increases my understanding of how things came to be the way that they presently are. It also enables me to distinguish between the true and the false where ideological appeals are concerned.

What is remarkable to me in my most recent revisiting of the Declaration of Independence is how many parallels can be drawn between that document and the present reality of this country. The litany of complaints in that document reads like a list of objections drawn from the present in the United States.

Let’s take a look at one of those objections. “He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms… Read the rest

When considering the state and its proper function in society, we must first begin with the notion of what a state is under various forms of society. In the totalitarian society, the state is the source of power and possesses absolute control over property. In the democratic society, the majority possesses power up to and including the power over private property. That is, the majority may vote themselves the property of the minority. Finally we arrive at the republican society, where the individual possesses power over his property and his person, and the power which he possesses serves as a check on both the majority and the state. We call these powers rights, and we acknowledge that they are sacrosanct and non-negotiable.

The exception to this notion of individual rights as being sacrosanct is of course the exercise of individual liberties in a manner whose net result or logical conclusion is the overturning of individual rights for everyone… Read the rest

After a year and a half of the Obama Administration, we may safely say certain things about the Obama way of governing. At the forefront of the Obama approach to any problem is the printing of money accompanied by a laissez-faire approach to the systemic issues which underlie any major catastrophe. The Obama Administration has realized the rub of the world economy, which is that it isn’t built on anything resembling reality in either accounting or trade.

For example, one might have safely foreseen the danger involved in assembling an economic union with a dozen countries, all of whom retained their national identities and the unique prerogatives thereof, while instituting a single currency for the entire economic union. Predictably enough, those countries with strong economies began running a trade surplus with the others, who, due to their unique prerogatives in welfare and pension obligations and the lack of a distinct currency of their own were unable to… Read the rest

The Power of Persuasion, or the Persuasion of Power?

I use that heading in homage to the resignation of Andy Stern, the head of ACORN’s labor-relations alter-ego, SEIU. He advocated opting for the latter.

We, my friends, must choose one or the other. They cannot both exist simultaneously within a single ideology.

The message of Liberty is alive and well, and just as capable of persuading the public in 2010 as it was in 1775. Naturally, believing this, I am vocally supporting using the power of persuasion.
