Medical journal retracts study linking autism to vaccine

…(CNN) — The medical journal The Lancet on Tuesday retracted a controversial 1998 paper that linked the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine to autism.

The study subsequently had been discredited, and last week, the lead author, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, was found to have acted unethically in conducting the research.

The General Medical Council, which oversees doctors in Britain, said that “there was a biased selection of patients in The Lancet paper” and that his “conduct in this regard was dishonest and irresponsible.”

The panel found that Wakefield subjected some children in the study to various invasive medical procedures such as colonoscopies and MRI scans. He also paid children at his son’s birthday party to have blood drawn for research purposes, an act that “showed a callous disregard” for the “distress and pain” of the children, the panel said….

“The mere publishing of this paper created something that will never fully go way: the false notion that MMR caused autism,” said Dr. Paul Offit, author of “Autism’s False Prophets: Bad Science, Risky Medicine, and the Search for a Cure,” and the chief of division of infectious diseases at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia…

…The Lancet came under criticism for the initial publication of the paper 12 years ago.

Autism Cases on the Rise Study Shows Increase Is Real, Not Just Due to Changes in Diagnosis Criteria article pertinent portion:

Many researchers have believed that the continuous increase in autism cases over the last decade — particularly the huge increase seen in California — isn’t real, but can be explained by “artifacts.”…

…Jan. 8, 2009 — Environmental factors may be partly behind California’s eightfold rise in new cases, a new study implies…

…But even taken together, they don’t explain even half of the huge increase in cases. “When you put it all together, this doesn’t come close to explaining the increases in the last 10 years,” Hertz-Picciotto tells WebMD. “The more you whittle away at this increase, the more you have to say that what is left over is real. … Given that autism cases keep going up, and can’t be fully explained by artifacts, environmental factors deserve serious consideration.”…

Yet questions remain. Coincidence? Doubtful!

Harry Reid never fails to deliver controversy: “Negro Dialect?”: Harry Reid’s Time Warp.

YouTube Preview Image

Just when you didn’t think Harry Reid didn’t have any more gaffes to give, he offers up an essay and statements in his normal way of looking down on the Black Citizens:
Reid Statement On Black History Month

February 1, 2010

Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid made the following statement in recognition of Black History Month:

“Nevada’s story cannot be told without remembering the many African-Americans that sought to make our state a place where all people are treated equal.

“I remember when Nevada was called the ‘Mississippi of the West.’ Restaurants would not serve African-Americans and movie theaters had separate sections. Sammy Davis Jr. and Nat King Cole could perform in Las Vegas, but could not stay in the hotel.

“Leaders like Donald Clark, J. David Hoggard Sr., Dr. James B. McMillian, Woodrow Wilson, Lubertha Johnson, Dr. Charles I. West and Dr. William “Bob” Bailey and Sarann Knight Preddy and many others persevered through ignorance and discrimination to integrate the gaming industry and promote minority-owned business in our state.

Harry Reid Op Ed: Black history is American history – Partial text seen below

Sen. Harry Reid: Black history is American history

“Black History Month is a great opportunity to reflect on the contributions of African-Americans to help make America the beacon of hope that it is. But while the accomplishments of African-Americans may be amplified during this one month, we feel the impact in our everyday lives.

Whether visiting our relatives in the hospital after a successful blood transfusion, waiting in traffic at a stoplight or watching our president speak from the Rose Garden, the contributions of black Americans are ingrained in our nation’s DNA.

The progress that has been made, just in the time that I have been in public service, to ensure diversity, equality and social justice in our nation is a testament to America’s greatness. I worked hard during my time in local politics in Nevada to integrate the Las Vegas strip and the gaming industry. I backed affirmative action in federal contracting and sharply criticized the Supreme Court when they turned Brown v. Board on its head and ruled against cities’ efforts to diversify their schools. On Capitol Hill, I have done my best to lead by example. My office partners with Howard University for an internship program every semester that encourages young people to get interested in public service. I have created an initiative to improve staff diversity of the United States Senate. These commitments that I’ve made are more than just a laundry list of what I’ve done – they reflect who I am and what I believe in.

Nice apology at the end! Speaks to another post of mine, say what you want Liberally then apologize later.

A number of people have been addressing their concerns with me regarding the mixing of politics and the Tea Party or 912 Project Groups.

The issue isn’t about the groups assisting members in vetting candidates or providing candidates with a platform to let people know their positions on the issues, which I think we can all agree is an important next step in this movement. Rather, the issues stem around group leaders being candidates or being involved in campaigns. Not only is this against the basic principles of the grass roots movement, in some cases it might even become a legal issue.

One particular group that has been brought to my attention, is one located in the SW region of which I was informed the leader is running as an actual candidate. It took less than five minutes for us to dig up potentially damaging information for the Tea Party Group and the candidate. It was also questioned whether the individual was using their position to move donations to their group over to their campaign. This is in no way acceptable if contributors are not informed of this. I’m not bringing this issue to light to cause controversy. It is my intention to save the grass roots movements from receiving undeserved black-eyes from a few rogue individuals and/or groups with adverse agendas.

I’m sure we have all been seeing the reports of the IRS hiring a large number of agents for this tax season. This should be warning enough for you to pay careful attention to everything we do. I have no doubt there will be many audits for those in the conservative movement and new organizations will be likely to draw their attention.

If you truly care for the movement and the progress the movement has made, I would strongly recommend individuals respectfully bow out of the groups to keep the whole movement strong and to prevent unwanted controversy. Remember, the movement is not about you or your personal gain. It is actually all about the exact opposite. Both the Tea Party and 912 Project movements are about a group of people who wish to do the right thing and bring our government back to being one of “We The People”.

I am receiving great updates from my friends in Kansas, regarding their proposal for a 10th Amendment Resolution in Kansas. Kansas is just one of the many states seeking a 10th Amendment Resolution for state sovereignty to stand firm above any laws passed down by the Federal Government.

January 15th was the 10 Amendment Hearing in Topeka. 400-500 Kansans showed up to support SCR-1615. It was a GOOD day!!!

What’s the next step?

SCR-1615 will be worked (final action) in committee. This is one of the most dangerous times for a bill/resolution. Legislators can change the substance of the legislation & then send it to the floor for a vote.

What can we do NOW?

1) Call or write the committee members encouraging their support & passage of the resolution “AS IS”

2) Call or write the Senate Leadership to encourage passage “AS IS”.

3) Call or write YOUR Senator to contact the committee members & State Leadership to pass it “AS IS”.

Here is the contact information for the committee members:

Senator Tim Owens, Chairman 785-296-7353, Tim.Owens@senate.ks.gov, towens10@att.net

Senator Derek Schmidt, 785-296-2497, Derek.Schmidt@senate.ks.gov

The Resolution will be worked …

When: Wednesday, Feb 3rd

Time: 9:30am

Place: Topeka Capitol, Rm 548-S

This is a test … our Senators are waiting to see how serious we are!! It’s is just as important that we are there Wednesday as it was when we filled the testimony room & hall to capacity on January 15th. We need to fill the room & hall once again so they’ll KNOW we’re serious. Don’t forget … wear Orange & I’ll see you there!!!
